Auto Spare Parts Market Traders Protest in Anambra State
Traders under the auspices of Landlords and Shop Owners Association in the New Auto Spare Parts in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State in early June, 2021 embarked on a peace protest to condemn the unilateral decision/plan by the current leadership of the market to levy every shop owner the sum of One million two hundred thousand naira (N1,200,000) to raise money to fund the building of more market shops in addition to the existing ones.
They complained that they are yet to recover from the adverse economic effects of COVID-19 Pandemic and the End-SARS Protest to their businesses and financial capabilities, hence they cannot afford to pay such a levy and will resist anyone that tries to lock up their shops for failure to make the payment as well as resorting to a law court to sort it out. They opined that construction of more shops will deprive their customers the only available limited car parking space and further advised that it may lead to building collapse as the foundation of the shops are not designed to be burdened with extra weight.
On his part the Chairman of Anambra State Physical Planning Board, Barrister Chike F. Maduekwe reminded the leadership of the New Auto Spare Parts, Nkpor that they are not to commence any building project without first obtaining a Building permit from the Board or risk arrest and prosecution in line with the provisions of the Building regulation of Anambra State.
